ProjectAssist Installation Errors (part 3)

Moving along, I decided to try the ProjectAssist install on a different machine, which we will be using for a development server, instead of doing it on my standalone XP workstation. Maybe the installer will work better on this environment.

I did a fresh install of Windows 2000 SP4, and then installed Project Assist, using all the defaults except

  1. install dir was c:dev
  2. data dir was c:devdata
  3. added the smtp url & port.
  4. I added a settings.xmp file to .m2 dir to handle the maven proxy access.
  5. I added perl’s environment variable to handle the perl proxy access.

When the installer finished, it displayed a list of all errors (shown below). There were lots of them.

When I posted info about this on the Borland forums, the response I got was:

W2K is not a supported/tested platform. The progress log file will have better information about what is going on.

First of all, I get points off for not reading the install guide more thoroughly.

Having said that, I thought that (according to eclipse) Eclipse itself should work fine on:

  1. Windows 98 & ME
  2. Windows XP
  3. Windows NT, 2000, and Server 2003

And adding to that the fact that Windows 2000 is supported by all the stack subcomponents, one would think that Jbuilder2007 / ProjectAssist would support it as well.

My assumption here is that while it is not “supported/tested” by Borland, it will work, it is just not guaranteed to work.

Having said that, I am a bit troubled by the fact that none of the big server versions (windows 2000 or windows 2003) are supported. I wonder about Vista, although I don’t think my server would like that OS.

I am running the ProjectAssist stack on a Proliant Server running multiple RAID drives, and the drivers are not available for XP. I understand that XP should be quite suitable for development and JBuilder itself but I would think that for such a server-centric application suite, a real server operating system would be better. As an aside, some would argue that Linux would be a better alternative here but that is not (yet) an option for JBuilder 2007.
